Dear Minister Freeland,

I urge the Government of Canada to announce an ambitious and comprehensive funding package in the 2023 budget to build more sustainable food systems in the Global South. People in the least-developed countries are in the midst of an escalating hunger crisis brought on by poverty and inequality, climate change, conflict, and food system failures.

As a member of the Grandmothers Advocacy Network (GRAN) I am very concerned.

Immediate support is needed to enable small-scale food producers to respond to short-term needs and build longer-term resilience. Funding is critical to enable those most at risk, especially women (including older women) and girls, to transform systems that shape their lives and the futures of their communities.

Canada can—and should— increase its investments in International Assistance towards resilient food systems, and develop mechanisms to support local communities, and women-led organizations, in their response efforts.

I look forward to hearing back from you on this important matter.

Best regards,
