Health Equity

GRAN'S POSITION ON Health Equity

Health is a fundamental human right.

Health equity exists when everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health. We work towards health equity when we identify and eliminate inequalities and increase access to opportunities and conditions that support good health for all. Health equity will be a reality only when all persons, no matter who they are or where they live, can attain their full potential for health and well-being.

Over time GRAN's efforts for global health equity have focused on:

  • Advocating for fair global access to life-saving medicines and vaccines;
  • Fighting for improved access to prevention, testing, and treatment for HIV and other communicable diseases.
  • Speaking up for child health;
  • Speaking up for the right to health of older women;
  • Raising awareness about Intellectual Property Rights in international trade agreements that would delay access to affordable life-saving health care;
  • Urging Canada’s fair contribution to The Global Fund to fight HIV, TB and malaria;
  • Supporting Canadian legislation M-132 to increase access to health care nationally and globally;
  • Calling for an urgent and comprehensive response to the ongoing global TB crisis, including in Indigenous communities here in Canada; and, most recently,
  • Advocating for increased investment in Canada's International Assistance to address the urgent global hunger crisis.

In 2023/2024 GRAN's work for health equity has been focused on the global hunger crisis and the many health impacts of malnutrition.  Please check out our Right to Food campaign page to see what we've been working on.
