GRAN Action for Education: Write Back-to-School Note to the PM

Dear GRANs:

As children in our country get set to return to school, we are asking that you write to the Prime Minister, urging him to reaffirm Canada’s global leadership in education.

Around the world, 222 million children are having their education cruelly interrupted due to conflicts, displacement and climate disasters. In June 2022, Education Cannot Wait (ECW) announced shocking new numbers indicating that the number of crisis-impacted school-age children requiring urgent educational support has grown from an estimated 75 million in 2016 to 222 million today.

All eyes are turning now to the UN Secretary-General’s Transforming Education Summit taking place on September 18, 2022. The Summit is seeking to mobilize political ambition, action, solutions and solidarity to transform education: to take stock of efforts to recover pandemic-related learning losses; to ensure that every child and adolescent receives a quality education of twelve years; to reimagine education systems for the world of today and tomorrow; and to revitalize national and global finances and resources to achieve SDG4

We want Prime Minister Trudeau to not only show up but to demonstrate the leadership he showed for the Charlevoix Declaration at the G7 meetings in 2019. Canada’s Charlevoix investment alone has reached 4 million girls and women across 55 projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Canada needs to reaffirm its global leadership in education.

GRAN Action:

We are asking you to send a short ‘back-to-school’ note to Prime Minister Trudeau. You may choose to send a handwritten note or an email. Your message should be timed to arrive during the first week of school in September. Click here for a template of a simple message to send.

We would like to track how many messages are sent, so please also take the time to send a brief email to us at info@grandmothersadvocacy.org letting us know you’ve participated in this action.

Additionally, you can use your voice on social media in the lead-up to the September 19th Summit, using the hashtags #transformingeducation and #letmelearn. For suggested tweets, social media posts, and sharable images, go to Results Canada’s campaign page.

For further background on the growing global education crisis, we recommend this Press Release from Education Cannot Wait.

Thank you for your voice for a quality education for all the world’s children.
