Sample - Letter to the Editor for GPE Replenishment

Here are four easy steps in writing a letter to the editor:

  • Engage the reader, by offering a good hook - climate change, a comparison with challenges Canadian children are facing being out of school, a recent article related to education
  • State the problem
  • Inform and provide a possible solution
  • Include a call to action - what needs to be done?

Here is a sample LTE for the GPE Replenishment ASK:

Re: Global Partnership for Education – An Opportunity for Canadian Leadership

Canadian families have faced many education challenges this year but not nearly as many as those in the global south.  Over 260 million children are out of school and that was before the pandemic hit.  The situation is worse for girls with almost 20 million girls in danger of never returning to school because of early child marriage, pregnancy, child labor and other forms of exploitation.

Every girl should have the right to determine her own future and this begins with education.

Canada has been a strong supporter of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) since its inception. The GPE works in the countries with the greatest needs and targets the children who are hardest to reach. At the 2018 G7 Summit in Charlevoix, Prime Minister Trudeau showed historic leadership for education for girls. I am hoping that our prime minister will renew his commitment to education at this year’s G7 Summit by giving $100MIL/year for 5 years to the GPE.

Some additional hints:

  1. Keep it short, sweet and to the point.  Keep it to about 150 words
  2. Use information on our resource page such as our backgrounder and GPE Fact Sheet to help you write your LTE.
  3. Send to more than one paper.
  4. If you get published, send a copy to your MP and/or tweet it out and let GRAN know too.
