You are Invited! GRAN Learning Event Tuesday, April 4th

Dear Grans,

This week we are forgoing our usual Monday Small Sip to extend this invitation to an upcoming GRAN Right to Food learning event that has us very excited!

Global Food Justice? Decolonizing the Paths Forward with Dr. Elizabeth Vibert.

This event will take place online via Zoom on Tuesday, April 4 from 3:00 – 4:15 p.m. ET.  We very much hope you will join us. You can register here.

Dr. Vibert is a longtime friend of GRAN, well-known to Victoria GRANs, and known to others especially through her work on the documentary film The Thinking Garden, a film telling the inspiring story of South African women seeking food justice through the development of a community garden. Elizabeth was our featured speaker at a previous GRAN learning event on food sovereignty held in April of 2021. We are delighted to have Dr.Vibert back to talk further with us about her work and to share her expertise on food justice and security.

Dr. Vibert is a professor in the Department of History at the University of Victoria. Her main research interests are food insecurity and food sovereignty in the era of climate crisis, colonialism, and the intersecting histories of poverty, gender, and race.  Her current focus is an examination of historical and contemporary causes of food crises, and powerful community-level responses, in four settings: South Africa, Colombia, Indigenous communities in southern and northern Canada, and refugee communities in Jordan.

During our learning event, Elizabeth will help us understand the impact of a pervasive colonial mindset on our current industrial food system and the struggles for food justice among the world's small-scale farmers. We hope to come away with a new vision for paths forward in building sustainable and just food systems, and how we might support small-scale farmers in their struggle to feed themselves and their communities with dignity. There will of course be an opportunity during the event to ask your questions. We are looking forward to a rich and productive discussion that will help inform our Right to Food advocacy actions and messaging going forward.

We very much hope you will join us -- and bring a friend! Please feel free to share this invitation with others. (And for those unable to be with us on the date, we will record the event and post a link afterwards on our GRAN Learning Events page.)

See you on April 4th!

Pat and Linda,

GRAN Co-Chairs
