On January 7, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending support for 66 international organizations, agencies and commissions, including key climate-change organizations and treaties, many of them affiliated with the United Nations.
Response to the US’s withdrawal from international cooperation has been many-voiced and swift.
“Isolationism is a failed response to a global crisis. By severing ties with the UN and critical climate treaties, the US administration is choosing to ignore the defining challenges of our century. We reject the rationale behind this retreat from reality. True leadership requires staying at the table to protect the sanctity and dignity of all life; leaving it only ensures that the most vulnerable will pay the highest price. Now is the time for people across the United States to make their voices heard in defense of international cooperation.” — Ife Kilimanjaro, Executive Director, US Climate Action Network
