Exiting 𝕏

GRAN has taken the decision to delete our account on the social media platform 𝕏.   As an organization that works to end violence against women and girls, we cannot in good conscience continue to make use of this platform in our advocacy given the online abuse that has been facilitated by 𝕏’s embedded AI chatbot Grok.

For those who have not been following this news story, users of Grok can upload a picture and “ask” Grok to alter the photo in a specific way. The Grok app can digitally remove the clothes of the person depicted, leaving them in computer-generated underwear, bikinis, transparent attire, or sexualized poses. Grok also has the capacity to then publicly post these altered images on 𝕏. As a result, sexualized images of women and children have been generated and shared widely without their knowledge or consent. These non-consensual sexualized deepfakes are not simply offensive content, but are a form of sexual abuse, leaving their victims feeling violated, exposed, and humiliated.
